Sal's stash
« on: February 24, 2015, 02:21:49 PM »
Ok, Sal and Diane here are some pics. Sal does find some nice goodies.

This is a limb cast. It's really nice looking.

this is one of another limb cast. This one is full of great color.

this is a really nice agate piece that looks a lot like Montana agate. But it's not.

this is some really nice plume.

Another of the same plume.
That's all for now. Hay Bob, nice pics. Did ya do some cabs of that Flame agate?

I know which rocks all of those are from except the one that you said looks like Montana - I think that one looked kinda blue in the whole?  I'll be able to tell when I see the edge of it.  I think that came from the same location as the plume.

For those of you on the meet at Succor creek - those plumes are what I went after on Monday when everyone else was heading home.

Thanks Dean.  I look forward to seeing them up close and personal!  My favs so far are the top limbcast and the one plumy white plume.

I forgot this one. It's some of the green wood Sal got.

Looks like that one wood sample was green all the way through.  I was wondering.  Some of it is agate/jasper filled.  It's pretty strange stuff.

Thanks for the pics.  I know what's coming back now.

Hey Sal, did you know that green petrified wood has lots of chromium in it, at least the stuff in Arizona does, and is rare to find in Arizona.   Don't know about other places but might be the same everywhere.

That's right and there's only three places in the world to find it;

Oregon, Arizona and Zimbabwe

Never really questioned the chemical content of it so, no, didn't know that. Not sure it's even relevant or not.
Since you know that, though, you can tell me if it's just an interesting piece of trivia or if it's important for
any reason.

Only 3 places?  Really? Hmmm.   Guess that pulls up the price of the 4-5 boxes of it that I have ;D

Not all of those pieces, like I said, are green all the way through. A lot have turned to jaspers or agate. I threw some in the box of rocks I sent to Dean to cut as presents - just some samples of what's there.  I'll probably go back to that area at least once this summer for a meet with a few pals on here.  I was rocked right to my shoe soles when I found the place.  The known area is just sooooo hunted out and trashed.  I like this stuff better anyhow.

About a year ago, there was an article on Google about Hampton Butte and how it was formed.  I just looked and it's not there anymore.  It described about the chromium from hot volcanic solutions coloring the wood and the fact that there are only three placed in the world where it can be found.

There were some other sites that described what elements determine the color of the wood however.

Now that I think about it, Clayton said chromium, too.  I let him pick out some samples for himself when I took some rocks for him to cut this summer.  Anyhow - whatever it has in it, it was sure fun to find a substantial quantity of it.  I so hope I can get back for a meet up this summer.  If things go like the are now, I should be able to do at least a 24 hour drive by sometime, maybe 48 hours.  I guess you can never have enough of something that rare in your stock. It's nice to have a special spot to take people on a meet, too.

By the way, it's not so trashed if you act like a chicken  ;D

Been there four times and still finding decent green wood.

Yeah, Clayton still finds stuff there, too.  I don't see any point to working real hard for it when I can just walk around and pick it up. Seriously.

What I meant was "Cross the Road"

LOL -- I took it to mean scratch and peck.  I'm sure he has a way of hitting exactly where everyone else has missed - but he still digs.  There's one place I'd love to have him come dig.  There's some wood that I know where it pools but can't find the source.  Tried many a time and it's driving me crazy. The wood is awesome and I can't get to it.  If I had a blade for the front of my jeep, I'd go for it. Serious.  I want that stuff.
